Raquel Paiewonsky presents her photographs

I have always been very interested in how the body is a container, sometimes in a mysterious and subtle way, and sometimes in a forceful way, of the experiences we go through during life.

The work I have been developing in recent years explores the relationship between our essence and our environment ; the contradictions that postmodern urban life generates in us ; and the impact of cultural constructions and stereotypes, always referring to our instincts and the most elementary parts of our nature.

Although usually I do not engage with the most visible violence, I closely deal with veiled violence that accompanies social, political and personal systems we experiment.

At times, I am much seduced by working with the body and its relationship to more abstract and intimate thinking, but when what my environment deploys is strong, urgent and sometimes brutal it is impossible to ignore it and it quickly turns into an artwork.

Raquel Paiewonsky is a dominican artist. Between 1991-2001 she lives in New York where she began working in painting, sculpture, installation and photography, often combining more than one of those media.

Her work has been exhibited recently in im propia (individual) at the Centro Cultural de España Santo Domingo (2012); Crissis… America Latina Arte y Confrontación 1910 – 2010 at the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes de Mexico DF (2010) ; Mundus Novus in the 53d Venice Biennial (2009) ; Global Caribbean in France, USA, Puerto Rico & Martinique (2009-2012) or Face to Face at the Daros-Latinoamérica Collection of Zurich (2007).

She is a member of the Dominican collective Quintapata that exhibited in Peru, USA, Argentina, Mexico, and at the 11th Havana Biennial (2012).
