Petrine Archer holds a B.A. in Theology History Sociology (1978) and a M. Phil in Cultura History (1987) from the University of the West Indies, she complete her formation with a M.A. in art history and a Ph.D. in Modern Art History from the Courtauld Institute, University of London, UK (1995).

She was also trained as a painter at the Jamaica School of Art of Kingston, Jamaica (1982).

Her career is plural. She is both professor of art history at the Courtauld Institute, and cultural consultant for Caribbean and English institutions.

She took action as : coordinator for the exhibition Africa the Art of a Continent at the Royal Academy of London (1995) ; guest curator and member of the board of administration of the NGJ – National Gallery of Jamaica (depuis 2000) ; consultant to develop the curatorial practices of the NAGB – National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (2000-2002) or even creator of the first art history department of the Jamaica School of Arts (2002-2004).

Petrine Archer curated the following shows :

 Fifty Years Fifty Artists at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica (2003) ; One Man’s Vision: The Vincent D’Aguilar Collection (2003) and Past, Present and Personal: The Dawn Davies Collection (2004) at the NAGB in The Bahamas – in the Caribbean ; Home and Away: Seven Jamaican Artists at the October Gallery of London (1994) ; New World Imagery: Contemporary Jamaican Art (1995) and Back to Black at the Whitechapel Gallery of London(2005) – in England.

Petrine Archer published the following books :
Jamaican Art, Kingston Publishers, 1990, as co-author
Fifty Years-Fifty Artists, Ian Randle Publishers, 2000, as editor
– And Negrophilia: Avant Garde Paris and Black Culture in the 1920s, Thames & Hudson, 2000, as author.

Her critics and reviews were published in Caribbean Beat and she took part to the book Creolité and Creolization for Documenta 11 in Kassel in 2002 with the article Paradise, primitivism and parody.
