Mirtho Linguet, aka Mirto | French Guyana

Born on October 25th, 1968 in Cayenne, French Guyana,
Lives and works in Cayenne, French Guyana.

Graduated in photography from the school of photography MI21 in Montreuil, France (1993-1996).

He won the first prize of the Journées internationales de la photographie (international days of photography) in Arles, France (1996).

He was artist in residence at the Point Éphémère in Paris (2010) and at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art of Dijon, France (2011).

His photographs were featured in the magazines Afrikadaa (2012) ; Regards Partagés, editions plume verte (2011) ; a supplement to Beaux Arts Magazine on the show OMA (2011) and Area n°2 (2010).

His last individual shows include : Alchimie in the framework of the first Rencontres Photographiques de Guyane (2012), also showcased at the Place Saint Sulpice in Paris (2011) and at the Jardin Botanique of French Guyana (2009) ; as well as Impressions en Espaces Improbables (IEI) from Cayenne to Montabo, Montjoly or Matoury – an original project for which the artist covered 160 advertisement billboards with images of his works steming on his pondering on the notion of territory (2012).

Mirtho Linguet participated in the collective show OMA, Outre Mer Art Contemporain at the Orangerie du Sénat, Paris, France, organized by the Fondation Clément of Martinique (2011).

Mirtho Linguet exhibits in the International Pavilion, Otherwise Black, of the BIAC Martinique, Biennale Internationale d’Art Contemporain, which first edition is held from November 22, 2013 to January 15, 2014 and which theme is “On the Resonance of the Literary Outcry in the Visual Arts“. For this need, Uprising travelled to the Martinique from November 19 to 26 to report on the event and conduct a series of interviews of the organizing team, the invited curators, the artists in residency and the artists from the International and Martinican Pavilions. In november 2013, Mirtho answered to our questions on his series Black Dolls and Flora as well as on his artistic approach. Read more
