Michael McMillan | The West Indian Front room: Memories and Impressions of Black British Homes

The West Indian Front Room: Memories and Impressions of Black British Homes (Geffrye Museum 2005-06) Courtesy © John Neligan.

Michael McMillan
St Vincent / UK.
Installation at the Geffrye Museum,
2005-2006.

The central installation is of a ‘West Indian’ migrant front room built to the dimensions of an Edwardian parlour and decorated and dressed in the iconic aesthetics that were familiar in the homes of many Caribbean families in the late 1960s early 1970s. An audio visual exhibition contextualises the central installation and consists of large scale reproductions of archive portraits of Caribbean families in their front rooms, a series of edited interviews listened via telephones on tables and short films recollecting and commenting on the material culture of the front room in the context of Post Second World War Caribbean migration to the UK.
