Mark King and his Birding series

The Birding series was realized during an artist in residency at Alice Yard, in Trinidad and Tobago. In conversations specific to Trinidad over the years, all people seemed to talk about were the Trini women. Upon my arrival, I also discovered that bird watching is a big deal in the island. Over 400 species of bird call Trinidad and Tobago home.

The country on the other hand has a very diverse ethnic background. Trini women are considered some of the most exotic women on the planet. Once I made the connection my mind was set.

I embarked on a project that presented Trini women as exotic birds. I came up with portraits of women incased in a space similar to those of taxidermied birds in museums, with each subject placed in unique nests. I focused on the attention grabbing archetypes of women from a leering male perspective e.g.The Amazon, Party Girl, Girl Next Door and Beach Girl.

Mark King is a Barbados-based photographer. In 2011, he participated in a screen printing artist in residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium. In the same year he was selected by the Lucie Foundation for their apprenticeship program. During the summer of 2012, Mark served as artist in residence at Alice Yard in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Mark has called Barbados, The Bahamas, Brussels, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. home. His international perspective directly informs his process. Mark’s work largely deals with social phenomena. He examines the ubiquitous in society and later intervenes; taking an often humourous approach to the topic at hand.
