Manuel Mendive | Cuba

Born in 1944, in Havana, Cuba,
Lives and works in Havana, Cuba.
Painting, performance, ceramics

Graduated in painting and sculpture from the Instituto San Alejandro (1963).

His career was rewarded by several and numerous prizes, among which the Cuban Visual Arts National Prize in 2001. He was also recipient of the honorary title Félix Varela from the Cuban government and was made part of the French “ordre du mérite” (both in 1994). In 2009, the UNESCO awarded him the medal of the five continents.

His last individual shows include : La foresta mágica (2012) and Conversando con la naturaleza (2011) at the Galeria Estudio Artizar in La Laguna, Spain ; La Luz y las Tinieblas at the Museo José Luis Cuevas in México DF, Mexico (2010) ; El color blanco, el azul, el verde y el color de mi piel at the Museo de Antropología e Historia of Mérida, Mexico (2008) ; Feeding the Spirit, the Light, the Ancestros, Olodumare, the most beautiful thing at the Gary Nader Gallery of Coral Gables, USA (2005) ; Los Ancestros, Orisha, la Naturaleza y el Pensamiento at the Museo de las Américas in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2003) ; Las Aguas, lo Cotidiano y el Pensamiento at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba (2002) and Shangó y la vida at the Recova de Santa Cruz in Tenerife, Las Canarias, Spain & in Palma de Mallorca (2002).

Regarding his participation to collective exhibitions, his work was showcased in : Outsiders at the Panamerican Art Projects in Miami, USA (2012) ; Maestros at the Galeria El Museo of Bogotá, Colombia (2011) ; Ajiaco. Stirrings of the Cuban Soul at the Newark Museum, USA (2011) ; Alicia Alonso Dances Here Tonight at the Magnan Metz Gallery in New York, USA (2010) ; Without Mask at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa (2010) ; La Mirada Persuasiva at the Galeria Estudio Artizar in La Laguna, Spain (2008) ; Surrounded by Water : Expressions of Freedom and Isolation in Contemporary Cuban Art à la Boston University Art Gallery (2008) ; Killing Time at Exit Art New York, USA (2007-2012) ; Figuraciones at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (2005) or the travelling show Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from The Farber Collection (2007-2010).

Manuel Mendive participated in the 11th Havana Biennial with his impressive performance Las Cabezas. But also in the 6th Havana Biennial (1997), in the 5th Biennial of Cuenca (1994) and in the 21st Biennial of São Paulo (1991).

Manuel Mendive’s artworks are contained in the collections of the following institutions :

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba ; Museo Emilio Bacardi in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba ; Museo de Arte Moderno of Cartagenas de Indias, Colombia and in the one of Panama (PANARTE) ; Musée d’Art Moderne of Paris, France ; CAAM (Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ; of the galleries Habana & Gary Nader, and also in the National Museum of Tanzania or in the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington DC, USA.
