Jennifer Smit was born and raised in Curaçao. Graduated in art history from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 2003, Jennifer Smit receives the Cola Debrot prize for culture in Curaçao.

Between 2006 and 2009, she teaches non-western art history at the Instituto Buena Bista (IBB) in Curaçao.

Currently, she is vice-president from the Caribbean section of the AICA (International Association of Art Critics), the AICA-SC.

In 1999, Jennifer Smit was curator for the Arte ’99 exhibition – a crucial event for contemporary Dutch Caribbean art. In 2010, she curates the show Antepasado di futuro.

In 2004, she creates with Tirzo Martha, David Bade and Nancy Hoffmann, the association ArteSwa – that organizes sociocultural projects, often community-based or oriented, with locals in Curaçao. This first project will be at the origins of the creation of the IBB.

In 2011, she takes part in the symposium « The Black Les Jacobins – Barbados/Martinique »during the Black Diaspora Festival.

Jennifer Smit is co-author of the books ARTE : Dutch Caribbean Art¸ with Adi Martis, KIT Publishers, 2001 and Curaçao Classics, Visual Arts | Artes Plasticas | 1900-2010, the catalogue of the Antepasado di futuro exhibition, with Felix de Rooy, KIT Publishers, 2012.

She participated in the compilation of the catalogue Caribbean : Art at the Crossroads of the World, under the direction of Deborah Cullen and Elvis Fuentes, at the Yale University Press (2012) ; and in the book Curating in the Caribbean, at the Green Box Editions (2012) under the direction of David A. Bailey, Alissandra Cummins, Axel Lapp and Allison Thompson.
