Experimental nature generally characterizes Jeannette Ehlers’s work. Image manipulation is often included in the artist’s photographic and video based works. On these changeable terms, meaning and identity are explored, in both a sophisticated and immediate way.

Jeannette Ehlers’ recent works all revolve around the Danish slave trade in the colonial era. In her works she wishes to shed light on the colonial amnesia in Denmark and Scandinavia. The artist’s own ethnic background, with a Danish mother and a father from Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies, adds extra strength to the works. Through digitally manipulated photographs and video installations, she puts Transatlantic Slave Trade and its impact on modern society under the microscope.

Graduated from The Funen Academy of Fine Art (1998) and from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art (2006).

She is recipient of several grants : Karl Mogensens Fond honorary travel grant,Denmark (2012) ; Kunstnerfonden af 1973 til gavn og støtte for danske malere og billedhuggere, honorary grant (2011) ; Niels Wessel Bagges honorary grant (2010) ; The Danish Arts foundation working grants (2010-2013, 2009, 2008, 2007) ; The Danish Arts Council (2012, 2011, 2009, 2008, 2007) ; Keramikeren fru Ville Christensens Legat (2009) and Ragnvald & Ida Blix Foundation (2003, 2007).
