Graduated in fine arts from the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras (1997) and in museal studies (Behind the Scenes at the Smithsonian) from the Smithsonian Center for Education of Washington D.C. (2006), Elsa María Meléndez is recipient of the Lexus Prize for the development of an artistic project in a museum of contemporary art (2009) and her work as an artist was rewarded by the first Prize on Engraving of the Ateneo Puertorriqueño in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2006).
Her formation was completed by a seminar of formation in exhibitions’  design at the University of Turabo, Puerto Rico (2005).

Elsa María Meléndez has been the curator of the MUAC – Museo de Arte de Caguas, since 2006. Before this period, she was already holding the position of exhibitions coordinator.

She is a member of the organizing committee of the Concrete Sculpture Biennial in the municipality of Caguas.
From time to time, she gives engraving and drawing lessons to children and adults.

In the framework of her position at the MUAC, she curated the following exhibitions :

Vívidos/sodiviV (2011-2012) ; No fue un mal entendido (2010) ; Tendency (2009) ; Papel/Ciudad : escenas citadinas, relatos veridicos y fantasticos (2008) ; El juego de la diferencia (2007) and Colección de Arte Cortés (2007).
